The girls track team is lining up and getting set for a successful indoor season. Hard work is being put in to make sure the season runs smoothly and to ensure that the girls are competitive all the way through indoor conference.
Early competition is on the mind for the team. The first meet for the girls was on Feb. 24 versus conference opponent Plainfield South.
“Our first meet is against South, so that should be good competition,” junior Khyli Harvey said, on the toughest expected competition this season.
Chasing goals seem to be a major part in the preparation for this season. Multiple girls have different individual levels that they hope to reach this year.
“I want to throw 35 feet, ” senior Deionna (Didi) Jones said.
The runners are looking for a good season heading in. According to head coach Tonya Landfair, multiple girls have a chance to go far this year.
“We have two distance runners that we believe could go to state this year,” Landfair said.
Success and placing high in the state is not all that is important for the girls. Landfair wants her team to arrive for overall personal growth on and off the track.
“ As a coach I never emphasize places and ribbons. Every girl matters even if they never place,” Landfair said.
Girls in any grade level join the team for a variety of reasons. Some seek competition and others see track as a way to have fun while being active.
“I joined because I really enjoy running and I like spending time with my friends, so I decided to join this season,” Allison Behounek said.
Many of the girls have specific motivators that keep them going. Freshman, Kasey Timm believes it is important to persevere through the rough patches.
“Keep pushing no matter how hard it gets,” Timm said.
Coach Landfair believes that hardships can push people to be better and she brings that philosophy into her coaching.
“You learn that you are a lot stronger in moments of stress, and you learn that you can overcome it with the right mindset.”
