On campus, people commonly dress similarly: slouchy. Hoodies, sweatpants, pajama pants, and t-shirts are the norm with little variations to each other. But, some people break the mold and wear much more complex or noticeable clothing.
Alternative dressing is a term to describe a way of dress that differs from the traditional way of dressing, such as emo, grunge, goth, or many other styles that are too numerous to mention.
Around the school, there are many people who dress alternatively. Some have a very specific style, and some mix their styles up with others.
“I mix a few styles like goth, grunge, and emo to make my outfits, “ senior Brianna Zielinski said.”
This is exactly how it sounds; a mix of all three of those styles, mainly dark colors in clothing, as well as eyeliner. Those three are a small number of the huge spectrum of styles within the school.
Rather than negative remarks, many of these students get compliments on their way of dressing.
“I do get weird remarks,” Zielinski said. “But more often than not, I tend to get more questions and compliments over how I dress.” These styles are becoming more popular, and with that,
Some friendships tend to form due to the bond created over their shared styles.
“Sometimes I bond with people over these styles, especially complimenting people who have a similar style to me,” Zielinski said.
Some styles are less common than others, and one that is not popular in America is called Acubi, a minimalist style from Korea which focuses on oversized clothing and multiple styles of top not usually worn in normal mainstream styles.
“I haven’t seen many people in this style,” sophomore Arin Belousek said. “It isn’t popular in America, but those who wear it wear it well.”
Usually, there is a reason that people wear different styles; most of the time, the students just feel comfortable with them.
“The reason I dress like that is because I feel good in it. It really just fits me,” s Belousek said.
There is another reason why some students dress alternatively, sometimes just to express how they feel;
“I dress like this just for self-expression, because I like expressing myself aside vocally, because usually it’s easier to dress in a certain style than to describe the way I feel,” senior Kaytlin Sharp said.
Some students are dedicated to their chosen style, and they wear their styles with pride daily with no slouch dressing days.. Not a single day. I dress this way no matter what,” sophomore Julian Alvear said.
Many people in the school commonly stand out for their style, and the people who wear a unique style especially do, such as senior Yassin El Moudden, who is commonly seen strutting the halls in a three-piece suit.
“I just wanted to use them so they don’t go to waste,” Yassin said. “I just didn’t want them to go to waste in my closet.”
El Moudden has been spotted wearing a diverse set of suits, including many colors, multicolored suits, and, especially surprising, festive ones.
“There’s always something new coming, but my all-time favorite is a Christmas-themed suit with cats on it,” El Moudden said.
