With a strong start to the season, the girls soccer team continues to push themselves. With a record of 2-0-1, the team is hoping to add another win at a home game today, 4:30 p.m. against Waubonsie Valley.
There are different sections of the game they need to work on throughout the season and break down to improve according to Kenneth Schoen, head coach. If the girls are able to do that they will be in a good spot.
“Lofty expectations, if we can achieve those it’ll be a great year, so I would say trying to hit those goals that the team made for themselves,” Schoen said. “Once the season starts and the games then we can break down performance and determine what sections are necessary to improve. The challenges, the tactical aspect of it. When you get into a game, everyone has different strengths on the team and different formations. You know, trying to break down what could make our team the most successful.”
The team is motivated to achieve where they want to be by taking the close calls from their last season and improveingfrom there.
“My personal goal is to beat all the other Plainfield teams. We had a lot of very tight games last year, and my goal is to win those kinds of games,” captain Marrisa Jacobs, senior, said.
In order to work as a team and beat the opponents, the team feels they need to have a strong connection to one another.
“I love the girls, I love my team. Our team chemistry is so good and our vibe together in the way we play soccer and how we can have fun and play hard at the same time,” Leilany Corona, sophomore, said.
Having a strong connection to each other leads to the girls playing for each other and pushing themselves to a goal they all have.
“One of my strengths is ability to maintain composure mentally when faced with challenges during the game. I want to enjoy the season while winning along the way,” Riley Freischlag, junior, said. “I enjoy being surrounded by people who have the same passion as me and are driven towards the same goal.”
Soccer is a very team-oriented sport, and it takes a lot of teamwork to achieve the end result the girls on the team want.
“Soccer has illuminated the importance of working together as a team and having someone to keep you accountable,” captain Selah Fornelli, senior, said. “ My teammates, we keep each other accountable and push each other to our limits.”
