The math team nears the end of their season in the last year of their coaching under Milan Bhatt, with coach Fremont Schneider taking up the role next school year. Bhatt and Schneider aspire to take the majority of their team to state this year.
“Try to get to state — as many as we can, ” Bhatt said.
“Get to state, every year, [and] prospects are looking good,” Schneider said.
The team consists of around 20 to 30 members — mostly juniors and seniors. Freshmen and sophomores are encouraged to join in hopes they’ll eventually take the places of those graduating.
“We need more freshmen and sophomores in our squad, but recruitment is difficult,” Schneider said.
Bhatt also added he’d like to set up this year’s freshmen and sophomores to be in good shape to lead the math team for years to come.
One sophomore on the math team is Christian Mikos, who’s ready to help his team improve and finish the year off strong at state.
“Individually I’m pretty confident, but there are a couple of events with teams that I think we could work on,” Mikos said.
Schneider is eager to lead the team solo in the coming seasons, as this is nothing he hasn’t seen before.
“This is my second year in full-time math team coaching; I was assistant coach at my previous school for about three years,” Schneider said.
The team has developed many fond memories through the years because of the team’s welcoming environment.
“We’ll go to Olive Garden, we’ll get quite the big table for everyone… it’s a good environment, everyone’s really friendly,” junior Jonah Francois said.
