Habanero, which is located within walking distance of the school in the same strip mall as Jimmy John’s and Pauly’s, was a delightful dive into Mexican cuisine. I was not disappointed
Chips and salsa were served immediately after being seated. The corn tortilla chips were well- salted and had a perfect crunch which provided a pleasant and different texture. The cilantro in the salsa shined but did not overpower the rest of the flavors: a perfect opener to the meal.
For the main dish, I ordered the Monterey Burrito. This burrito came with steak, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, beans, and sour cream. The steak was a personal choice as it can be ordered with chicken or ground beef. I was pleased with the burrito. The steak had a nice char that added more flavor to the entire dish. The vegetables were a burst of freshness, and the cheese mixed with the sour cream tied it all together. The beans were the best part as they had a great consistency and were not overpowering the steak flavor.
The same beans that were in the burrito also came as a side and were paired with rice. The side dish of beans was served with melted cheese on top, which elevated the beans to another level. The rice was just okay, and nothing stood out flavor-wise. It was not bad, but it didn’t raise the level of the dish.
Adding a soda brought the total to around $20 per person. I would say this price is reasonable with the amount of food given and the quality of the dishes.
Service was quick and friendly. I have no complaints about Habanero and saw no negatives during my visit. Anyone looking for fast, high-quality Mexican food in Plainfield should try Habanero. I rank Habanero a 5 out of 5 stars.
