I’m sure students have their reasons for why they feel the need to start a school fight, but does it actually do anything? Does it solve problems? Does it make someone seem tough? No, fighting is not the way to answer problems.
Fighting is an immature action and should not happen. I’m sure fighting happens for many reasons: someone is jealous of someone else, some guy stole another guy’s girl, one person said something and the other person took it the wrong way, but there’s really no reason why some people choose to use fists over solving the situation.
School fights need to be controlled and taken care of when a student is involved in too many fights or causes trouble too much to the point where suspension or expulsion is a possibility. Suspending or expelling just removes them from school, and that might be what they wanted from the beginning.
Students should be disciplined in school so the underlying issues can be resolved. In order to prevent a fight from happening again, the student should talk to a catalyst teacher, counselor, dean, or even a subject teacher that the student trusts continuously. Talking to someone might be a big help to the student so that way they are not keeping everything to themselves and just waiting for it to explode one day.
I personally think fighting or anything along the lines of that is wrong and should be dealt with. The catalyst program is a one-time opportunity and once a student gets into a second fight they receive a suspension. This prevents someone from having the opportunity to do it again.
I believe that whoever started the fight first should be dealt with more intensely since they had the guts to throw the punch or whatever they used to fight, but both participants should be disciplined.
School fights are a disruption to the school day, students gather around to watch and it stops the flow of the hallway traffic. This causes other students who are indifferent about the fights to be late to class or even worse, brought into the fight.
I honestly think that there is no solution to stop fights completely, but we can take action to prevent as many as possible. There could be programs where the students and teachers can learn the warning signs of a fight and how to properly deal with it before it happens. There could also be a peer meditation, a class where students learn how to prevent/deal with conflict. Let’s stop the trend before it escalates.
